Intermediates We Supply: CAS Numbers, Grade Basis and How Each One Is Quoted
· HARMONY TECHNOLOGY (ZHEJIANG) CO., LTD.
The short answer: four intermediates — o-bromochlorobenzene (CAS 694-80-4), CDMT (CAS 3140-73-6), vinyl laurate (CAS 2146-71-6) and ETFBO (CAS 17129-06-5). Each is quoted by CAS number and assay, because an intermediate is bought by structure and purity, not by trade name.
The four intermediates
| Compound | Synonyms | CAS | Typical role | State | Packaging |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| o-Bromochlorobenzene | 1-bromo-2-chlorobenzene; 2-bromochlorobenzene; 1-chloro-2-bromobenzene | 694-80-4 | dihalogenated benzene building block for dyes, liquid-crystal materials and agrochemical actives | liquid | closed-head drums, UN-marked IBCs |
| CDMT | 2-chloro-4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazine | 3140-73-6 | triazine core used as a carboxylic-acid activating reagent, and the precursor for in-situ DMTMM generation | solid | fibre drums, 25 kg bags |
| Vinyl laurate | ethenyl dodecanoate; vinyl dodecanoate | 2146-71-6 | vinyl ester used as an acyl donor in enzymatic transesterification and as a monomer for poly(vinyl laurate) | liquid | closed-head drums, IBCs |
| ETFBO | 4-ethoxy-1,1,1-trifluoro-3-buten-2-one; 4-ethoxy-1,1,1-trifluorobut-3-en-2-one | 17129-06-5 | fluorinated enone building block for trifluoromethyl chemistry | liquid | closed-head drums, small containers |
Note on the ETFBO CAS: 4-ethoxy-1,1,1-trifluoro-3-buten-2-one is supplied as a defined geometric isomer, and the registry entries for this name carry more than one number — PubChem CID 2780395 lists 17129-06-5 and 59938-06-6 for the same structure, consistent with the E/Z pair. The specification sheet for this grade therefore states the isomer together with the CAS registered for it, rather than leaving the buyer to infer it from a trade name. The number on this page (17129-06-5) is the one our portfolio records for the grade; if the specification you are qualifying against names the other registry number, say so in the enquiry and it will be matched to the grade rather than assumed.
⇒ Three things follow from the table. First, a trade name is not an identity: “CDMT” is unambiguous because it maps to one CAS, but a name like “bromochlorobenzene” spans three positional isomers, and only one of them is this grade. Second, the state decides the packaging — CDMT is a solid and travels in fibre drums or bags, while the other three are liquids and travel in closed-head drums or IBCs; an enquiry that specifies “drum” for a solid has not been read. Third, assay is a method, not a number: on a fine chemical the specification states the content and the method (GC or HPLC area percent).
What an intermediate enquiry has to carry
| Item | Why it decides the quote |
|---|---|
| CAS number | Fixes the structure; a trade name does not |
| Assay or purity target | GC/HPLC percentage — the grade tier |
| Water content and any limit on residual solvent | Changes the drying and packaging step |
| Isomer, where the compound has one | A different purchase, not a different price |
| Quantity for the first order, and the annual run rate | Decides package size and whether the plant runs a campaign |
| Destination and end use | Drives the document set (SDS in the required language, transport classification) |
How an intermediate is quoted and documented
A quotation for one of these four carries: the compound name and CAS, the assay and the method it is measured by, the specified impurities or limits, the packaging, the net weight per unit and the document set issued with the shipment (specification sheet, batch COA, SDS, and the transport document for the route). Where a customer has to qualify the material first, a sample lot is quoted against the same specification, so the trial and the order are measured on the same target.
What we can provide
All four intermediates are supplied by the group’s operating companies, quoted by CAS and assay, with the specification sheet issued before the order rather than after it. Where the end use is regulated at the destination, the requirement is stated rather than implied, and the documents that support the buyer’s own filing are listed on the quotation.
Who contracts and ships: every shipment is contracted, invoiced and shipped by the group operating company named on the quotation and on the documents for that shipment. This page is the group’s technical reference material.
